Veteran midfielder Jonjo Shelvey joins Rizespor on loan

Once upon a time, Jonjo Shelvey was the future of English football, the player everyone wanted to build their team around. Liverpool signed the then-18-year-old central midfielder in 2010 to be the next Steven Gerrard. But he wasn't that.

Today, he is a 31-year-old veteran who couldn't hold down a regular starting spot in Steve Cooper's Nottingham Forest team - so he moved on loan to Turkish club Rizespor for the rest of the season.

Three years after his move to Anfield, Shelvey was on the move to Swansea, the team also playing in the Premier League. The Welsh side offered Shelvey regular playing time and freedom to play football the way he wanted: hitting long passes, bossing the midfield and being the primary owner of the ball. After two-and-a-half years of playing for the Swans, the midfielder joined Newcastle United in January 2016 and stayed with the Magpies through thick and thin for seven years - one of those being in the EFL Championship. Shelvey even got to captain the black-and-whites as soon as he joined the club due to an injury to first-choice skipper Fabricio Coloccini. The bald genius' form was inconsistent at best - just like his club's performances.

Jonjo joined Nottingham Forest on loan from Newcastle United in January and helped the Tricky Trees remain in the division against all odds. However, his fortunes at the club took a turn for the worse when he fell out with the boss. Shelvey made just eight appearances for Forest last season but did not feature in any matches after April, particularly after a terrible performance in the 2-0 defeat against Aston Villa.

The eccentic baldie was not part of the squad for the final weeks of the last season and did not travel with the team for their pre-season training camp in Spain. It was only a matter of finding another club willing to take such a high-earning player on their books. With the Saudis seemingly unimpressed, the next best thing was the Turkish Super Lig fifth-placed club.

Shelvey may have felt unwanted in the past months, but there is somebody for everybody, it seems. Good luck in Turkey, you bald genius.
