Both sides are eager to bounce back after frustrating domestic outings over the weekend, and with qualification hopes delicately poised, the stakes are high in this Match Day 3 fixture of the 2025/26 campaign.
Monaco enters this encounter under new management, with Sébastien Pocognoli taking charge of his first European match for the Red and Whites after replacing Adi Hütter during the international break.
The Belgian’s debut at the helm ended in a 1-1 draw with Angers in Ligue 1, extending Monaco’s run of three consecutive draws across all competitions.
Despite their winless start to the UCL campaign, which includes a heavy 4-1 loss to Club Brugge and an encouraging 2-2 draw with Manchester City, Monaco have remained unbeaten at home this season in all competitions (W3, D2).
However, their continental form tells a different story, with just one win in their last five UEFA fixtures (D2, L2), and a leaky backline that has failed to keep a clean sheet in 14 straight matches.
Tottenham, meanwhile, comes into this clash with a mixed bag of form.
After opening their Champions League campaign with a win over Villarreal, they were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw away at Bodø/Glimt, salvaging a point thanks to a late own goal.
That result extended their unbeaten run in UCL group stage fixtures to six games (W3, D3).
A 2-1 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa over the weekend means Spurs have only won one of their last four matches in all competitions.
Their away record, though, remains encouraging — excluding a penalty loss to PSG in the UEFA Super Cup, they are unbeaten in all six of their competitive away fixtures this season, scoring at least twice in each.
Monaco’s squad remains hampered by injuries, with Eric Dier, Lukas Hradecky, Christian Mawissa, Vanderson, Denis Zakaria, Lamine Camara, and Paul Pogba all ruled out.
In attack, however, they remain dangerous, with Folarin Balogun pushing for a start after scoring off the bench against Angers. Ansu Fati, another key figure in the frontline, is expected to feature prominently despite not finding the net last time out.
The Spanish forward has shown flashes of brilliance in recent weeks and will aim to exploit a Tottenham defence plagued by injuries of their own.
For the visitors, manager Thomas Frank is dealing with a long list of absentees. Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Yves Bissouma, Radu Dragusin, Kota Takai, Ben Davies, and Dominic Solanke are all sidelined, while Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie are racing against time to be fit following knocks picked up prior to the Villa clash.
In their absence, Kevin Danso could continue to partner Micky van de Ven at the back, although the latter is one booking away from a UCL suspension.
Up front, Xavi Simons remains a focal point for Spurs, despite not opening his goal account.
The Dutchman’s creative influence will be vital as the North London side looks to unlock Monaco’s defence.
Historically, this fixture has seen plenty of entertainment. Monaco holds the edge in the head-to-head, winning three of the five previous meetings (D1, L1), including two 2-1 victories during the 2016/17 UCL group stage.
Remarkably, all five encounters have seen both teams score, and given each side’s attacking strength and defensive frailties, another open contest is expected.
Monaco have also fared well against English opposition at home, losing just once in eight such matches (W5, D2).
In terms of form and statistics, both sides have consistently featured in high-scoring affairs. Monaco’s five home games this season have averaged 4.8 goals, and they have conceded at least twice in each of their last three UCL matches.
Tottenham have scored at least twice in all six of their competitive away fixtures this season and have seen both teams score in five of their last six games.
Furthermore, only one of Spurs’ last 18 UCL matches ended without them finding the net, while Monaco have played out just one goalless draw in their last 72 European outings.
Key players will likely determine the outcome of this thrilling clash.
Monaco’s Balogun has two goals in his last three appearances and will be eager to impress, especially against English opposition.
For Spurs, Mohammed Kudus has been in fine form, registering four goal contributions in his last four games for club and country, and could be crucial in the final third.
However, his disciplinary record is something to watch, having been booked in two of Tottenham’s last three away fixtures.
Key Pointers
- Monaco are on a two-match winning run against Tottenham
- Monaco have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 14 matches
- Tottenham have only kept one clean sheet in their last five games
Monaco will hope the home crowd can push them over the line and help Pocognoli secure his first win as the Red and Whites manager. Tottenham, though, will be desperate to avoid a slip that could dent their bid for a top-eight finish.
Given both sides' recent performances and statistical trends, a high-scoring affair is firmly on the cards.
Prediction: Over 2.5 goals.
