Bundesliga goes out with a bang: Lewandowski is the record-breaker

Reading Time: 3min | Sat. 22.05.21. | 19:40

Bayern star Robert Lewandowski scored 41 in a single season to break a 49-year-old record

The final matchday of the German Bundesliga offered plenty of twists and turns, along with a few shocks. But the headlines are rightly going to one of the best strikers the world has ever seen – the amazing Robert Lewandowski.

Polish goal-machine scored late in Bayern’s win over Augsburg to make it 40 goals for the season and top Gerd Muller’s 40 goals from the 1971/72 season. For almost half a century it looked like that record couldn’t be topped, but Lewa can do it all! It was a Hollywood-like story that ended with the all-important goal. Bayern were already thrashing Augsburg by four goals to two, with neither of those four goals coming from the Bavarians’ hitman.

But Robert delivered just like he always does. She showed his unmistakable goalscoring instinct to tuck in a rebound in the 90th minute and celebrated like crazy. It meant so much to him. His desire to compete, break records and outscore all other strikers brought him to such amazing figures. Seven years with Bayern yielded an incredible 294 goals in 329 matches for the German giants – a truly magnificent return for the 32-year-old Polish predator.

Elsewhere, next-generation star Erling Haaland scored two goals in Dortmund’s easy victory over Bayer Leverkusen to make it 27 goals in as many Bundesliga starts as the yellow-blacks secured another season of Champions League football with a third-place finish.

Borussia Monchengladbach missed out on and European football spot completely as they finished below the league’s surprise package Union Berlin, a team that was competing in German fourth tier just 15 years ago. Monchengladbach will also lose their boss Marco Rose, who will now take charge of Dortmund.

Werder Bremen slipped down to the second tier for the first time after 41 years. A famous German club, who fielded talented players such as Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker, Aaron Hunt, Theodor Gebre Selassie and many others won’t compete in the top flight next season.

And the champions? Well, there’s no surprise there… Bayern Munich continue to rule Germany.
