The celebrations following Paraguay's historic victory over Germany continued off the pitch, as the country comes to a standstill today, with no one working in honor of the famous win
Paraguay's national football team produced one of the biggest upsets of this year's FIFA World Cup by eliminating Germany on penalties in the Round of 32. The Guaranis' stunning victory prompted Paraguayan President Santiago Pena to fulfill his promise and declare June 30 (Tuesday) a nationwide public holiday.

The head of state personally announced the news on his X account immediately after the dramatic match ended. "Paraguay never gives up. A day off, damn it!"
The possibility of declaring a public holiday had already been hinted at just hours before kickoff by the Paraguayan government's spokesperson, who confirmed the president's intention. "The president mentioned that he would analyze the situation. I wouldn't say it's very likely, but based on the president's comments, such a possibility does exist."
Paraguayan law allows the executive branch to declare up to three additional public holidays each year, giving Pena the legal authority to make the decision official.
