Chelsea’s way of consoling Joao Pedro — Brazilian named Blues’ Player of the Season

It’s unlikely this will ease the striker’s disappointment too much, but it is certainly a classy gesture from the English club

Joao Pedro failed to make Brazil’s squad for the upcoming World Cup. Although it was never officially stated, it is clear to many that Carlo Ancelotti left him out in favor of Neymar. The Italian coach was under enormous pressure from the Brazilian public to include the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star, despite the fact that Neymar has barely played over the past three seasons.

Injuries have kept him away from the pitch far more often than football has, yet he was still given the opportunity to appear at a fourth World Cup. Meanwhile, 24-year-old Joao Pedro will have to wait another four years and continue scoring goals in hopes of earning his debut at the tournament in 2030.

It was reportedly an emotional night in the home of the Chelsea striker. His strong performances and 20 goals this season ultimately were not enough for Ancelotti to include him among Brazil’s 26-man squad. Having featured in both of Brazil’s matches this year — a 2-1 loss to France and a 3-1 victory over Croatia — Pedro likely believed he had done enough to secure a place on the team.

Chelsea attempted to lift their player’s spirits after the disappointment. One day after Ancelotti announced the squad, the London club revealed that Joao Pedro had officially been named Chelsea’s Player of the Season for 2025/26. A thoughtful gesture, but only limited consolation.

What is particularly interesting, however, is speculation that missing out on the World Cup could lower Pedro’s market value and potentially encourage Barcelona to pursue a transfer. Reports had already linked the newly crowned Spanish champions with the Brazilian forward, although Chelsea were said to be demanding €100 million. That figure could now decrease somewhat, though Pedro’s recent award may complicate matters.

In any case, Pedro remains under contract with Chelsea until the summer of 2033, meaning Barcelona would still face a very difficult — and expensive — task if they decide to try to sign him.
