Portugal manages to beat Hungary in the last 10 minutes of their opening match in Budapest
It all looked like Hungary will do to Portugal what Sweden did to Spain last night - to prevent the favourites from taking all three points. However, still reigning European champions found the way to score three goals in the closing minutes of the match. Final score 0-3 at Puskas Arena in Hungary.
Even though home team of Hungary held their ground for 84 minutes and even had a couple of promising chances (and a disallowed goal due to offside) - Portugal were just too much.
The hero of Portugal's opening victory is their captain and superstar Cristiano Ronaldo who scored a double and with those two goals leveled with and skipped over Michel Platini to become the best goalscorer of European Championships with 11 goals.
First opportunity of the match was the act of Hungary's Adam Szalai who tried with a nice header in the 37th minute but Rui Patricio pulled off a great save to thwart him.
Three minutes later, guests from the far west of Europe tried themselves. Diogo Jota attempted a low shot into the middle of the goal, but the Gulacsi did well to stop his effort.
Moments after, Ronaldo failed to convert his beautiful positioning into a goal as he sent the ball over the crossbar in the 42nd minute.
It was a lullaby of a game most of the time - yes, Portuguese had constant possession of the ball, but the Hungarians were organized in defence.
And then, shock in the 80 minute - Hungary found the back of the net. Szabolcs Schon put the ball behind Rui Patricio, however - sighs of disappointment took over the arena as he was flagged for offside.
Eventually, all of those attempts to hold the Portuguese off fell into pieces. It was the 84th minute when Rafael Guerreiro, with tons of luck, sent the ball behind Gulacsi.
That goal crumbled the home team and it all went downhill after that.

Only three minutes later, Ronaldo had his chance to equalize Platini's record. And he was successful - his penalty shot was more than accurate.
Cristiano Ronaldo thus became the first player in European Championship history to score 10 goals in the competition, overtaking Platini’s record of nine, all of which he scored in the 1984 edition.
And to top it all off, Ronaldo scored his second and his team's third in the 92nd minute. It looked as if he was offside when collecting a pass after an intricate one-two play inside Hungary's goal box but Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakır did not see anything wrong and also decided not to consult with the VAR assistants.
Ronaldo's record-breaking 11th in Euros and his 106th in Portugal's uniform.
Also, with 36 years and 130 days of age, Ronaldo has become the oldest player to score 2+ goals in a European Championship match, taking the record from Andriy Shevchenko, current Ukraine national team manager.
Portugal have never lost against Hungary in 14 previous encounters (W10 D4). In fact, Hungary are the team Portugal have faced the most times without ever losing.
Additionally, Portugal are the first team in European Championships history to score three goals in the final 10 minutes of a match.
Portugal's tight win is not good news for their group opponents who will be facing each other in tonight's clash of the titans - France vs Germany in Munich.
