The High Court in Kakamega has allowed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to detain Denmark Muchiti for 14 days, as investigations into the death of Kakamega Homeboyz defender Silas Abungana continue.

Muchiti, who is the younger brother of the deceased, will remain in police custody to allow detectives sufficient time to record witness statements, obtain the postmortem report, and subject him to a psychiatric evaluation to determine his fitness to stand trial.

The outcome of the investigations will guide the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on whether to prefer criminal charges.

The suspect had reportedly gone into hiding following the incident, but was later arrested and is currently being held at Shisasari Police Station in Kakamega County.

Abungana succumbed to severe head injuries after allegedly being struck with a blunt object.

Medical reports indicate that the injuries led to a blood clot in his brain, which ultimately caused his death.

He passed away shortly before midnight last Wednesday while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital, a development confirmed by the club in an official statement on Thursday morning.

The tragic incident has plunged Kakamega Homeboyz, the player’s family, and the wider football fraternity into deep mourning. Club chairman Cleophas ‘Toto’ Shimanyula made an emotional appeal to the government to ensure justice is served.

“This is a great loss to us as a club. I appeal to the government to ensure that the person responsible is brought to justice,” Shimanyula said.

Abungana had joined Homeboyz in August 2025 ahead of the current season and quickly established himself as a key player under head coach Patrick Odhiambo.

He previously featured for Shabana FC, Gucha Stars, Zoo FC, and MCF, building a reputation as a dependable defender.

He was part of the Shabana FC side that earned promotion to the FKF Premier League in 2023, before leaving the club in January 2024.

He later reunited with former coach Sammy Okoth at Gucha Stars, where he helped secure promotion to the National Super League for the 2025/26 season, a move that paved the way for his transfer to Kakamega Homeboyz.
