European champion humiliate the world champion in Paris

Reading Time: 4min | Thu. 12.03.26. | 07:33

Kvaratskhelia scored a brace in a convincing 5-2 PSG win over Chelsea

Many Chelsea fans were left baffled by various Chelsea coaches who made their changes in tactics or player selection, but always kept Robert Sanchez as the keeper. The Spanish goalie has been a clear number 1 during Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Marseca and Liam Rosenior, up to now. But the Blues boss finally decided to give a chance to Filip Jorgensen and the Dane was not only in the starting lineup for the FA Cup game with Wrexham, but in a very important first leg against PSG in the Champions League. Jorgensen had some good saves in this game, but it was his direct error which lead to the third goal in a match which ended with a 5-2 PSG win.

Chelsea was on par with the European champions for most part of the game, created some good chances, but in the end, the Parisians used their individual qualities to score three goals more than the English team and are travelling to London quite confident. Barcola’s efficiency, Dembele’s ball control and Kvaratskhelia's mastery were too much for Chelsea tonight. Even the fact that Liam Rosenior had a positive record against PSG as Strasbourg head coach (one win, one draw, one defeat) didn’t stop the Parisians from winning comfortably at the end. Chelsea managed to come back twice, but after Jorgensen’s error and the third goal, it was over.

It was fifth minute of the game when Chelsea created their first chance. Reece James crossed from the right, but his delivery missed both Joao Pedro at the near post and Neto at the back. Chelsea had the initiative, but it was PSG who scored from a first chance of the game. Chelsea couldn’t clear the ball from the penalty area after a free kick, and a deep cross found Neves. He headed it down to Barcola who smashes past Jorgensen via the underside of the crossbar: 1-0. The Danish keeper made a fantastic save and denied Dembele in the 15th minute. Excellent Neto broke out from the left and nearly scored a goal in the 18th minute, and Jorgensen had another save on the other side of the pitch in the 25th minute, when he denied Barcola. Chelsea deserved their draw and it came in the 28th minute when Fernandez switched the ball over to Gusto, who was completely unmarked, and his shot somehow passed near Sofonov for the equaliser. But Ballon d’Or winner decided to step in and show his talent. Dembele ran a counterattack after Palmer's chance for Chelsea (saved by Sofonov) dribbled Fofana twice and took a strong shot for 2-1 in the 40th minute.

One of PSG’s best players, Desire Doue, had a bad day tonight, and not only did he play average in attack, but he was totally deconcentrated in defense, allowing the Blues to equalise in the 57th minute. Neto stole the ball from him, and Marquinhos just couldn’t keep up with him. He crossed the ball into the goal area, where Fernandez only had to step in and shoot for an easy goal. Doue was subbed for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and he made all the difference. But first lets go back to Jorgensen, who gave the ball directly to Barcola in the 74th minute. The ball ended up with Vitinha, who lobbed the Dane for 3-2. And then Kvaratskhelia stepped up with a monster volley in the 86th minute to totally kill the game. But PSG didn't give up, and the Georgian forward used a quick counterattack in injury time to score a brace and give Parisians a huge advantage before the second leg.
