The historic Kamukunji Grounds has been transformed into Kamukunji Recreational Centre, a modern facility featuring an 11-a-side football pitch, a 7-a-side field, basketball courts, a boxing ring, a community centre with a library, an IT lab and a recording studio.

While Kamukunji has staged sporting events before, it is largely known in Kenya for hosting political rallies, including the infamous Saba Saba demonstrations in the heat of the fight for multi-party democracy.

However, the Government of Kenya (GoK) embarked on a major upgrade of the then dusty grounds to a modern facility after a groundbreaking ceremony presided over by President William Ruto in March 2025 as part of the Nairobi River Regeneration Program

A year later, the majority of the works are complete, at least according to photos shared by the Principal Secretary (PS) for Interior and Coordination of National Government, Raymond Omollo.

The new facility, which sits on a 7.27-acre piece of land, now features a completed 11-a-side football pitch with an artificial playing surface as well as a 7-a-side pitch for utilisation by the populace.

Apart from football, the new facility also has a modern basketball court, a boxing ring and a community centre with a library, an ICT library and a recording studio.

“The park also includes an amphitheatre for public events, landscaped gardens, children's play areas, paved walkways and solar-lit open spaces.

Enhanced drainage systems and retaining walls have been added to curb flooding as part of the Nairobi Rivers regeneration effort,” reads the post by Omollo

According to the Kenya Police FC patron, the complex will be under the care of the national government once opened.

“Its management will be supported by the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, ensuring coordinated oversight, security and maintenance so the park remains a protected national heritage and a thriving public space,” he remarked.

The facility comes as a sigh of relief to the neighbouring community, who will use it to not only nurture talents but also enable Nairobi-based teams to host both matches and training sessions, especially with the anticipated closure of many facilities in anticipation of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
