Cameras at the Camp Nou captured an unusual scene after the final whistle: the visibly shaken German coach staring at a single spot for several seconds, almost in tears. It was the team captain, Raphinha, who noticed something was wrong and approached Flick to speak with him and try to calm him down. It turned out that the German was unhappy with his team’s performance, because Alaves, as a reminder, took the lead and later had another chance to complicate the match.

And although his team eventually recorded a victory—its fourth in a row in La Liga—the former Bayern coach knows well that his side is far from last season’s level.
“I’m not sure I should say this, but in the end Raphinha told me the same thing I had been saying: that we will improve in the upcoming matches. That’s what we talked about” Flick explained to DAZ when discussing the situation.
Raphinha agreed that the team is not looking its best at the moment.
“We know we are not yet at our highest level. But we’ll work to reach it as soon as possible, and we’re convinced we will end the year the right way. The best defense starts with the attack. I try to make things easier for our defenders. I run as much as I can to win the ball back. I try to initiate the press, and my teammates always follow. I accept that responsibility” concluded the former Leeds winger.
