Gaspo face Wadadia test in race for WPL playoff semis slot

Women Premier League (WPL) side Gaspo Women face Wadadia FC’s test in their bid to qualify for the playoff semis where they will line up against holders Vihiga Queens.

Gaspo finished second on the zone A log at 29 points while Wadadia managed 26 points for third place in zone B. The two sides are set to face-off on June 19 with the match venue set for Nakuru.

While Gaspo has been one of the top teams in the league, Wadadia have experienced a steady rise and are looking to fight for their first league title. Coach Rashid Sumba acknowledges the task ahead but has expressed confidence in his charges ahead of the playoffs.

“We have had a good season and are preparing for a tough match against Gaspo. We faced them when the league was unified and since a core of the team is still the same and they have a few additions of very good players, we know we will have to put in the work to match them. We are working on our finishing as our defence ahead of the match.”

“Winnie Kanyotu, Elizabeth Wambui and Mercy Airo make for a very lethal attacking side and our defence will have to be at its best. In addition to defence, our transition from midfield to attack has to be flawless. Ruth Chebungei has been our main goal scorer, as the others have been inconsistent, but the squad will need to step up,” said coach Sumba. 

In their last two matches, Wadadia lost 6-0 to Nakuru West Queens and played for a one-all draw in their last match against Kisumu All Starlets but the tactician maintains the result is not an indicator of bad form. 

“The huge loss to Nakuru was an attitude problem. The players had a misunderstanding in camp and it showed in that match. By the time we were getting wind of what was happening it was too late but we have since worked things out and that was evident in the Kisumu draw,” Sumba explained.
