K’Ogalo headed into the match on the back of a win over defending champions Kenya Police FC, a victory which was the fifth in six matches.

Tusker, on the other hand, had suffered a 2-1 defeat to Kenya Police, as part of their mixed start to the season.

Despite hinting at making wholesome changes, Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor only made one change to the team that won against Police; Bryson Wangai replacing Ghanaian Ebenezer Adukwaw in the starting eleven.

K’Ogalo started the match strongly, dominating play and threatening Tusker’s goal, but profligacy in the final third denied them a goal in the first five minutes.

However, Gor Mahia did not need to score for themselves as Tusker netted an own goal in the seventh minute.

Tom Teka played a harmless back pass to goalkeeper Brian Opondo, who failed to control the ball that rolled into the back of the net.

Buoyed by the goal, K’Ogalo pushed for a second, but once again, Felix Oluoch failed to control the ball on two occasions as Tusker cleared their lines.

The Brewers got an opportunity to draw level at the half-hour mark when Thomas Omole was released by Opondo on a counterattack from a Gor Mahia corner, drove into the box and unleashed a shot, but Bryne Omondi in the Gor Mahia goal was equal to the task to save it.

Tusker grew into the game as half-time approached, creating half-chances as Omole threatened from the left flank, but none could result in a goal before the half-time whistle blew.

In the second half, Tusker pushed more in search of an equaliser, but the Sylvester Owino-marshalled Gor Mahia defense stood tall to secure the important win.

The victory extended Gor Mahia’s lead at the top of the table to four points, having reached 19 points as second-placed Kakamega Homeboyz take to the field on Sunday, 23 November.

Kenya Police 1-0 Mathare United

At the Police Sacco Stadium, Kenya Police edged Mathare United by a solitary goal to make a huge step in their quest to retain the league title.

Harambee Stars defender Abud Omar’s 27th-minute goal was all that the Law Enforcers needed to move to third on the log standings with 14 points, five shy of Gor Mahia and with a game in hand.

Mara Sugar 0-1 KCB FC

At the Awendo Green Stadium, KCB ended their five-match winless streak with a 1-0 victory over Mara Sugar, courtesy of a December Kisaka goal inside the first minute.

Bidco United 0-0 Bandari

Elsewhere, Bidco’s goal drought continued as the club entered not only a fourth-match winless streak but also the fourth game without scoring in their goalless draw with Bandari at the St. Sebastian Park, Murang'a.
