This was the second time this season that the record Kenyan champions hosted a league match at Kasarani, having played their opening fixture there against Bidco United.
In that opener, Gor suffered a shocking 1–0 defeat but have since managed to turn their form around in subsequent matches.
On Sunday, the club collected Kshs 1,323,800, marking a significant increase compared to their last home fixture at Nyayo Stadium a week earlier against Posta Rangers, where they realized Kshs 902,900.
For the opening-day match against Bidco United, the gate collection stood at Kshs 985,700.
“A total of Ksh 1,323,800 was collected from ticket sales in our match against Ulinzi Stars at Kasarani today. A big thanks to all fans for the support. The collection is a testament to our unity as we continue pushing upwards,” read a statement from club treasurer Gerphas Okuku.
Gor last collected more than a million during the second leg of last season's Mashemeji Derby.
On the pitch, however, things did not go entirely as planned for the defending champions, as they were held to a 1–1 draw by the struggling military side.
Gor Mahia got off to a dream start when Felix Oluoch put them ahead inside the first six minutes with a goal that Ulinzi’s goalkeeper should, arguably, have done better to stop.
Midway through the first half, Boniface Muchiri equalized for Ulinzi, scoring in his third consecutive game to secure a point for the visitors.
In his post-match remarks, head coach Charles Akonnor admitted that his team struggled in several aspects of the game.
“It was a tough game, and I think we were slow in our approach during the first half. We lacked compactness and will need to improve in certain areas,” said Akonnor.
Gor Mahia will next face Kenya Police FC in what promises to be another tough outing on Sunday at the Nyayo National Stadium.
