Gor Mahia camp had been hit by a go-slow of players last week
Gor Mahia defender Kennedy Onyango is confident that the team will perform well in their continental assignment even as the League champions continue to sharpen their skills during this pre-season.
K'Ogalo continued their FKF Premier League dominance, having won their 21st league title in the 2023/24 season, and once again booked their place as Kenya's representatives in the CAF Champions League.
While the club has been dominating the Kenyan League, that has not been the case at the continental level. Their performance in recent years has not been impressive, but Onyango believes this is the time to turn that around.
“It is no longer news or a big deal when Gor Mahia wins the FKF Premier League. Our fans and Kenyans at large are now used to that. The challenge and news is when we perform well in the CAF Champions League,” said Onyango.
“We are all aware that the club has not had good results on that front in recent years but I believe we are going to change all that this season. Gor Mahia is a big club not just within the borders but also outside the country, and so we have to reclaim that glory,” he added.
The former Nairobi City Stars defender also gave assurance that the players are ready and able to compete at the highest level in continental football and give a good account of themselves.
“I am confident in all of us and our ability to perform well at the highest level on the continent. We have a good balance of young and experienced players, all of whom complement each other to bring out the best performances.”
Gor Mahia camp had been hit by a go-slow of players last week who were allegedly demanding to get a share of the club's earnings from winning the league.
The management thereafter sent show cause letters to players who were involved, and that now seems to be sorted as the team has resumed full training in preparation for the new season where they will be competing both locally and internationally.
