The two nations faced each other in the first leg of the final round of qualifiers on Friday, 24 October at the Nyayo National Stadium, with Harambee Starlets claiming a 3-1 victory.

Heading into the match, the Kenyan team had a video call with President Ruto, who not only wished them well, but also handed the team Ksh5 million for their victory.

In addition, the squad was promised another cash reward on their travels for the return-leg, where a win could earn each player Ksh1 million, with a draw, on the other hand, guaranteeing them Ksh500,000 each.

Speaking after the match, Odemba, who was visibly pleased with the boost, shared how impactful the Head of State’s gesture was.

“It was not part of the preparations, but of course motivation always has a positive impact on the team. Players are always playing for something, and if they get a promise from the President, it is a big thing for us and we are always looking forward for more,” she said.

Nevertheless, the former Kenya Police Bullets coach said the overall prize was also enough motivation to squeeze a win in front of the charged home crowd.

“Either way, the girls are motivated to win because they want to play at WAFCON. It has been nine years, 10 by the time WAFCON is held, and so there is that urge and hunger to qualify for it,” she added.

In the match, Sevilla star Fatoumata Kante gave the visitors a lead inside the first two minutes after getting the better of Lorine Ilavonga.

However, Kenya managed to restore parity seven minutes later when Mwanalima ‘Dogo’ Adam converted from the spot.

Red-hot Fasila ‘Kamama’ Adhiambo would then score from a shot outside the box in the 19th minute to give Kenya the lead, before debutant Shaylene Opisa scored a third in first half stoppage time to give Kenya a 3-1 lead at the break and in full time.

The Gambia will host Kenya for the return leg on Tuesday, 28 October at the Stade Lat Dior in Thies, Senegal. Starlets left the country on Saturday morning for the all important clash.
