From idols to beliefs and family ties, each number highlighted has a deeper meaning
Every jersey number tells a story, and for the Harambee Stars players, the digits on their backs represent more than just a position on the pitch.
During an open media training session held on Wednesday, 16 July, Harambee Stars players spoke to Sports Eye about the personal significance behind the numbers they wear on their backs.
Tabby NashipaeBoniface Muchiri – 11
Club: Ulinzi Stars
Position: Winger/Attacking Midfielder
The former Tusker FC winger lost his place in the national team when he temporarily halted playing football to join the Recruits Training School (RTS) for his military training.
He, however, made a return to the team in October 2024, after making it to coach Engin Firat's final squad for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), and has since been a mainstay even after Benni McCarthy took over.

Michael Kibwage – 4
Club: Tusker FC
Position: Centre-back
The dependable Tusker FC assistant captain is rebuilding his international career after a three-year absence from the Harambee Stars squad.
The 2024/25 FKF Premier League season was riddled with injuries for Kibwage, but this national team recall is a fresh opportunity to reignite his dreams.
His admiration for Liverpool and Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk is evident in his number choice.
“Virgil van Dijk is my role model. That’s why I wear number 4.”
Ben Stanley Omondi – 17
Club: Gor Mahia (on loan from Migori Youth)
Position: Midfielder
The exciting midfielder has been one of Gor Mahia’s brightest revelations since his mid-season move from Kakamega Homeboyz.
Known for his energy, creativity, and composure, Omondi has quickly become a regular in Gor’s midfield, and is now making waves on the international stage.
His number 17 is inspired by one of the finest midfielders of the modern game.
“Kevin De Bruyne wore 17. He’s the reason I chose it.”
Alpha Chris Onyango – 8
Club: Gor Mahia
Position: Midfielder
A tactician on the pitch, Alpha is the heartbeat of Gor Mahia's midfield. Whether switching the play or breaking down opposition presses, his football intelligence sets him apart.
He has been a consistent standout in a tough season for Gor Mahia, and his jersey number honors his family.
“We are eight members in our family.”
Austin Odhiambo – 10
Club: Gor Mahia
Position: Attacking Midfielder
Odhiambo is one of the FKF Premier League’s most admired players.
Gifted with vision, flair, and a keen eye for the goal, he has been a consistent game-changer for Gor Mahia. His selection of number 10 is a clear nod to greatness.

Alphonce Omija – 5
Club: Gor Mahia
Position: Central defender
At just 22, Omija has already shown his reliability and maturity.
He can play both as a centre-back and a right-back, and has become a regular in the national setup since joining K’Ogalo.
He led the Harambee Stars in the absence of captain Abud Omar during the 2024 Mapinduzi Cup, showing leadership beyond his years. His jersey number aligns with global defensive greats.
“It’s a classic defender’s number.”
Some of the celebrated defenders who wear jersey number five include Carles Puyol, Fabio Cannavaro, Rio Ferdinand, Harry Maguire, and Paolo Maldini, among others.
Lewis Bandi – 13
Club: AFC Leopards
Position: Right back
Bandi’s football journey started in Makadara, and he has risen through the ranks at AFC Leopards, transitioning from an attacking midfielder to a versatile fullback.
He represented Kenya abroad during the Chapa Dimba All-Stars tour of Spain in 2019, and continues to impress with his composure and adaptability.
His attachment to number 13 goes way back.
“Since I was a little child, I started playing with number 13 at the Makadara Junior League.”

Club: Kenya Police FC
Position: Midfielder
Nabwire was not part of coach McCarthy’s initial CHAN squad, but forced a dramatic rethink after impressing in a friendly.
Now back with the national team, the dynamic midfielder is eager to make his mark. His number choice reflects both personal belief and luck.
“6 is my lucky number.”
After all, it was in the sixth month that Police won their maiden FKF Premier League title.
Mohammed Bajaber – 7
Club: Police FC
Position: Winger
One of Kenya’s brightest emerging stars, Bajaber, came into the limelight after scoring a spectacular goal against Gambia in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, a goal that helped Kenya rescue a 2-2 draw.
Fans have since been calling for more of him. His choice of number feels natural and fitting.
“Number 7 just kinda stuck with me. It feels like mine.”
Daniel Sakari –24
Club: Kenya Police FC
Position: Right Back
The former Tusker FC defender is known for his relentless energy, defensive discipline, and ability to push forward. A spiritual man, he believes his number reflects completeness and divine alignment.
“24 is a complete number. A day has 24 hours, I believe I bring that wholeness. I am a full package. It also relates to the 24 elders in the Bible.”
Sylvester Owino – 4
Club: Gor Mahia
Position: Central Defender
Standing tall at the heart of Gor Mahia’s defence, Owino made his senior team debut in September 2024 and has since established himself as a key figure.
His bond with number 4 is rooted in tradition and loyalty.
“It’s the jersey I’ve been using since my first call-up, so I’ve stuck with it.”
