Harambee Stars midfielder Duke Abuya has opened up on how playing in the Tanzanian Premier League has helped polish his skills and boosted his career.

His impact was immediate, playing a key role as Yanga clinched their 31st league title following a 2-0 victory over fierce rivals Simba SC in the final round of the campaign.
The title win marked Yanga’s fourth consecutive Premier League triumph, and Abuya’s contribution went far beyond domestic success.
The former Kariobangi Sharks midfielder helped the club lift five trophies during the 2024/25 season, including the Federation Cup, Toyota Cup, Community Shield, and Union Cup.
He was also instrumental in guiding the team to the group stage of the CAF Champions League, further solidifying his growing stature on the continent.
In an exclusive interview with Mozzart Sport, Abuya highlighted the differences he has experienced since crossing the border.
“The expectations from the fans and the club are on another level. Their demands are high, and that pushes you to raise your game,” he said.
The versatile midfielder also pointed out how the Tanzanian environment has provided a solid platform for growth.
“The experience has given me the platform and audience to showcase my abilities, placing me in a good position to attract more opportunities,” he offered.
Abuya, known for his versatility and intelligence in midfield, noted that his passing has significantly improved during his time at Yanga.
“I focus on simplicity, whether it is short or long, and I ensure every pass counts," he explained.
The Kenyan international admitted that the intensity and competition in Tanzanian football have made complacency impossible.
The financial rewards are just the cherry on top.
“You have to be at your best to keep up. On top of that, it’s been financially rewarding as well,” he disclosed.
Looking ahead to the upcoming CHAN tournament, Abuya had a message for his national teammates.
Harambee Stars will start their CHAN campaign on Sunday, 3 August, with a match against DR Congo.
“Stay calm. They have a good squad. Trust the coach’s plan, and everything will fall into place. I’ll be watching and supporting. At the end of the day, I am Kenyan,” he concluded.
On Monday, 28 July, Yanga officially announced that Abuya had completed a permanent move to the club.
The 31-year-old signed a two-year contract extension that will see him stay at the club until July 2027
