Inter loves Man City's defensive leftovers – John Stones is heading to Italy

Juventus tried to hijack the deal, but it appears they joined the race too late. John Stones is on his way to Inter.

According to Sky Sports, the experienced England international has reached a verbal agreement with the reigning Serie A champions on a two-year contract. Unless there is a dramatic late twist, Stones will arrive at San Siro, where Inter will once again capitalize on a Manchester City departure.

Last summer, the Nerazzurri signed Manuel Akanji on loan after the Swiss defender sought more playing time, before making the move permanent this summer for €16 million. Stones, however, will arrive as a free agent after his contract with City expired in June.

There had been concerns that the deal could collapse because of the 32-year-old center-back's wage demands, but Sky Sports reports that Inter have managed to strike a favorable agreement. Nicknamed "The General" during his time at the Etihad, Stones is expected to earn €8 million over two years, or €4 million per season—significantly less than the salary he received at Manchester City.

Despite his injury record, Stones' experience and quality attracted interest from Arsenal, Juventus, and Chelsea. The Blues, in particular, were eager to add more leadership to the dressing room, which also explains their interest in Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson.

However, one of Stones' main priorities was continuing to play in the UEFA Champions League, something only one of those three clubs could guarantee. And with Arsenal likely offering him a backup role, the England international opted for Inter instead.

That does not mean Inter have abandoned their pursuit of Cristian Romero. The Argentine defender remains the top defensive target for head coach Cristian Chivu. The problem is Tottenham's asking price, with Sky Sports reporting that any move for Romero will depend on Inter's ability to sell Benjamin Pavard before the transfer window closes.

During his ten seasons at Manchester City, Stones made 295 appearances and won 19 trophies, establishing himself as one of the club's most successful defenders of the modern era.
