Jonas Hofmann fires shots at his former boss, who is now in charge of Real Madrid
Bayer Leverkusen player Jonas Hofmann opened up about his frustration over the lack of playing time under Xabi Alonso and didn’t hold back in criticizing the Spanish coach’s communication style. In an interview with Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger, Hofmann admitted that the previous season was really disappointing for him - both what happened and how it all played out.
The German midfielder didn’t mince words when pointing out what he sees as one of Xabi Alonso’s biggest shortcomings during his time at Leverkusen: the lack of direct, honest conversations.
"From a coach, I expect that if something’s bothering them, they say it straight up. I want open, clear communication," he stated firmly. "No more than two weeks should go by without a coach checking in with his players - that's how you keep everyone sharp and push the level of training. Competition is a good thing, obviously, but I expected a bit more from a coach."
Things got so tense last season that Hofmann even considered leaving the club:
"I'm feeling good now, but with Xabi Alonso still in charge, I probably would’ve looked to move on."
Luckily, the arrival of Erik ten Hag on the Leverkusen bench has given the 33-year-old a fresh start: "New coach, new chance. I’m a Bundesliga guy, and I’m ready to fight to get back to my best. I feel great."
With these comments, Hofmann not only closes the door on a frustrating chapter, but also makes it crystal clear what he felt was missing under Xabi Alonso: approachability, transparency, and solid leadership. His blunt remarks speak to the frustration of a player who felt pushed aside without real explanation - and who expected more from a coach now managing Real Madrid.
