Despite fine positioning and some clever moves, the AC Milan striker fails to score against Empoli at San Siro (0-0)
That 70th minute was anything but pleasant at San Siro on Friday night, as vocal AC Milan joined their voices of anger and disappointment to say goodbye to Divock Origi. At least for tonight.
The prolific ex-Liverpool striker did his best to score against Empoli, but it simply wasn't enough. Just like the more famous Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku against Salernitana earlier, Origi was always around the ball and action yet simply unable to find the back of the net.
Milan's coach Stefano Pioli provided him with a place in the starting XI, ahead of such stars like Giroud and Rafael Leao. Alas, this wasn't Divock's night.
A quick look at the stats shows he won plenty of duels and had a decent amount of accurate passes, but his name was absent from the scoresheet, and that's all that counts when your mission is to deliver. His successor Giroud did score, though, in the opening seconds of the stoppage time, before the goal was nulled due to the Frenchman's handball.
Those two Friday draws of Milan-based teams allow SS Lazio to stabilize their Serie A runners-up position in case of victory in the derby against Juventus.
