While all of his teammates were running all over the pitch at the Puskas Arena, celebrating another Champions League triumph, the PSG captain had a more important thing to do
One of the basic rules in sports is: Stay humble in victory and gracious in defeat.
Unfortunately, many players forget about it, especially about its first part. And that is somewhat understandable. In the moments of immense joy, people often don’t think clearly or reason rationally. At such times, the rivals and their feelings are rarely on the winners' minds.
Luckily, there are always examples to the contrary. Those that restore faith in sportsmanship. Last night, in the Champions League final, Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos gave everyone a valuable lesson.
Following Gabriel Magalhaes' miss from the spot, when PSG's second consecutive UCL triumph was sealed, everyone in the Parisians' ranks started running wildly all over the pitch, mainly towards the custodian Matvey Safonov.
Everyone but Marquinhos.
Instead of getting carried away in celebration - which would, once again, be fully justified - the 32-year-old went straight to his compatriot and Brazil teammate to console him and offer him words of comfort.
Marquinhos realized there was time to rejoice and get ecstatic later, and that things like sportsmanship, fair play, and graciousness come first.
Hats off, Marquinhos. Thank you for this lesson. We needed it.
