McTominay's stomach bug leaves Scotland holding its breath

The Napoli midfielder missed training in Boston just two days before the Tartan Army's long-awaited World Cup return

Scotland fans can breathe a little easier - Scott McTominay has not been ruled out of the World Cup opener against Haiti despite a minor health scare.

The Napoli midfielder skipped training on Thursday after suffering an upset stomach and was notably absent from the team bus upon arrival in Boston. Instead, Scotland's talisman travelled separately alongside a team doctor as a precaution.

Given McTominay's importance to Steve Clarke's side, the sight was enough to raise a few eyebrows. The 29-year-old has become Scotland's go-to man in recent years, scoring 15 goals in 70 appearances and finding the net again in last weekend's emphatic 4-0 win over Bolivia.

Scotland begin their first World Cup campaign in 28 years against Haiti on Saturday, before taking on Morocco and Brazil in a daunting Group F schedule.

Teammate Kenny McLean struck an optimistic tone when asked about McTominay's condition.

"Hopefully that doesn't spread. Fingers crossed Scott will be fine," McLean said. "Everyone knows how big he is for us. When you have special players like that, you want them available."

So do Scotland. Especially with a World Cup finally back on the menu.
