KCB had Elvis Ochoro to thank as the former Nairobi City Stars man made decent saves throughout the contest

Nairobi United saw the Mozzart Bet Cup slip through their hands after a narrow 1-0 loss to KCB FC in a tightly-contested quarter-final clash at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Sunday evening.

A decisive first-half strike from Richard Omondi proved enough to separate the two Premier League rivals, as KCB executed their game plan with discipline and resilience.

The early goal ultimately settled a match that lived up to expectations, with both sides showing tactical awareness and defensive organization throughout.

KCB head coach Robert Matano acknowledged the challenge posed by their opponents but praised his team’s execution on the day.

It was a tough game just as we had expected. Nairobi United are a very tactical side, but our plan went well as we got an early goal. It is a revenge of sorts. They beat us in the league and we have gotten the better of them today, so it’s nice,” he said.

With the victory, KCB now shift focus firmly to the latter stages of the competition.

We have to win the Cup now. We are now looking at the final. The league is still there; it could already be gone, but we want to finish well in a respectable position as a team.

“Everyone played well today. I can’t pick out just one. We are now focused on the next fixture, and also seeing to finish well in the league,” Matano added

Between the posts, Elvis Ochoro delivered a standout performance to earn man of the match honours, making crucial saves to preserve KCB’s slender lead.

“I thank God and feel great to be the man of the match. Today, my concentration levels were up, and I credit that to the performance.

It won’t be an easy match in the next fixture in the semi-final, but we will fight just as well as we did today,” Ochoro said after the game.

KCB’s path to the quarter-finals has been impressive, highlighted by commanding victories over Chebaywa Lions (3-0), Zetech Titans (4-0), and a narrow 1-0 win against Compel FC in earlier rounds.

Despite sitting seventh in the league standings and showing inconsistency—having lost twice in their last five matches—this cup run offers Matano’s charges renewed momentum and a chance for silverware.

For Nairobi United, the defeat marks a disappointing end to their campaign as defending champions, while KCB march on with growing belief and their sights firmly set on lifting the trophy.
