The club roared back to life in 2022 courtesy of Nyakundi and efforts from like-minded individuals

When Fred Nyakundi noted a disturbing trend that saw dozens of young men within Lelechwet area in Rongai, Nakuru County, waste away thanks to heavy alcohol consumption and spiralling crime, he knew he had to act.

The Science and Mathematics teacher at Lelechwet Comprehensive School could not bear watching another young and energetic man lose direction- especially when he knew he possessed ideas to keep them engaged and from being a burden to the community.

Tens of ideas crossed his mind, but football - the world's most popular sport- emerged as the most effective tool to redeem the young men, who were slowly slipping into complete ruin.

Nyakundi swung into action and revived Lelechwet Football Club, a once-glittering community outfit that had been staring at the danger of sinking into oblivion.

The team's hard-earned respect in regional football and tournaments was at risk- not because of a lack of talent, but societal vices were swallowing the youth at an alarming rate.

With the help of like-minded members of the community, he breathed life into the club in 2022.

When Mozzart Bet visited the club, at their home venue on Friday, 28 November, Nyakundi proudly counted scores of youthful men who had seen the light again through football.

To encourage his efforts, and in line with the gaming firm's giant resolve to promote sports, Lelechwet FC received full kits and footballs courtesy of the New Jerseys for New Champions Initiative.

"A few years ago, there were big concerns about the youth engaging in crime and alcohol. We decided to revive this football club so as to give the young men a second shot at an honest lifestyle. I am glad it is paying off," Nyakundi opened up, who is also an active member of the team.

The sporting materials are ones which Nyakundi believes will serve as a magnet to more players in the region, as well as inspire them to perform better in the Mosop Super League.

Currently, the club, which is actively looking for a CAF-certified coach, is placed 11th in the 16-team competition.

"We are grateful to Mozzart Bet for boosting our resolve to keep our youth busy. This gesture will bring us more players and motivate the boys to do better in the league," added Nyakundi.
