Mururi vows to inspire Vihiga back to top flight football

Vihiga United head coach Mike Mururi has promised to make good use of his experience and fire the club back to the Football Kenya Federation Premier League.

The club was axed to the second tier last year after bowing to Kenya Police in the relegation/promotion playoff that pits the third place finisher in the league and the third from bottom placed team in the top tier.

Mururi who thrusted Kakamega Homeboyz to the country’s highest inter-club competition in 2016 is hoping to repeat the same feat with Vihiga and help them develop roots as the team has never spend more than two seasons with the big boys.

Vihiga first gained promotion to the league in November 2017 alongside Wazito but were dropped in May 2019 only to be promoted the following year together with Nairobi City Stars.

“The game at a time approach is paying dividends thus far. I intend to employ it up to the final round of the season. We have a number of objectives we want to achieve but ultimately, our eyes are firmly fixed on scaling a staircase high. I have helped teams before get promoted and will do everything I can to take Vihiga high up there,” he said.

The club that enjoys support from the county government began the season sourly but has stepped up especially in the second leg as they sit five points behind leaders Fortune Sacco.

Mururi credits the recent performance to the chemistry between the players and called on support from the bosses to keep them motivated throughout.

“We began poorly as the club lost more than half a dozen players to deep pocketed clubs. I had to rebuild and this explains why we didn’t have great results in the first leg. With the right support, then, we stand a good chance of getting promoted, “he added.
