Mandela has spent more than a decade in South Africa since leaving Tusker FC back in 2012

Former Kenyan international Musa Otieno has revealed that he advised Brian Mandela to make the move to Mamelodi Sundowns insisting to him that loyalty does not pay.

Mandela made the move to the reigning South African champions back in October 2020 from Premier Soccer League side Maritzburg United.

Musa who is now the Kenya Police FC assistant coach opened up on his close relationship with Mandela as he added how Sundown players used to intimidate them back in the day.

“I told Brian Mandela [Onyango] that loyalty doesn’t pay. Brian will not do anything without telling me; we have a beautiful relationship. I look at myself and Sundowns, I didn’t play there, but he is there. During our playing days, Sundowns players would be coming in with nice cars they were driving and [psychologically] they had already beaten us,” Musa said in an interview with Far Post.

Musa spent 14 years at South African side Santos and helped them to the league title in the 2001-2002 season before calling time on his career back in 2011.

Mandela who joined Santos back in 2012 after an outstanding season with Tusker left for Maritzburg United in 2015 but Santos chairman Goolam Allie did not initially approve the move.

“When Maritzburg came in [to sign him], Goolam didn’t want to give him a contract, so he sneaked out and went to Maritzburg. When Goolam found out, Santos went to his place and took all his stuff. I reminded Brian that loyalty doesn’t pay,” added Musa.
