Shabana FC bounced back in the league title chase with a 1-0 dismissal of visiting Kakamega Homeboyz FC, a goal scored by lanky Congolese forward Assis Batshi.

The hosts, coming into the contest on the back of a 3-0 humiliation by Nairobi United, who in effect completed a season double over them, took care of the Homeboyz threat as early as the half-hour mark.

The win keeps them in the title conversation, or at least, a top-three finish.

Assis says they desperately had to bounce back.

‘’We have been among the top teams in the league, and we want to stay there, among the top. Having lost by a big margin in our last league match, we knew our fans expected nothing but a win at home and I told myself I had to deliver,’’ says the 23-year-old.

The mid-season signing has had an unstable start to the Kenyan Premier League but vows to make the most of the remaining matches as he fully settles in the country.

His scoring boots now found, what remains for him is staying consistent.

‘’It’s not the easiest of leagues. Every single team you meet has its strength and sometimes that’s what makes the difference. Luckily for us, we have a smart technical bench that understands how matches should be handled and they always advise on necessary adjustments with every game coming,’’ he continues.

A DR Congo national, Assis started out professionally in the Zambian Super League, playing two seasons for Napsa Stars before moving east to Rwanda for a season with Rayon Sport FC.

He would head to the Congo for another season with FC Renaissance du Congo as he widened his playing portfolio.

At just 20, he had already played in three top-flight leagues in very strong footballing nations.

His entry into the Kenyan Premier League makes the KPL the fifth stop in what looks like a promising career ahead. So far, he likes it.

‘’The league generally is competitive and interesting. There is no underdog and as much as there are a few big names, no one fears them, and they get to be taken down occasionally. It’s what makes the KPL special. Players are technically gifted and that even reflects in the national team performances sometimes. I’m happy to share the pitch with most of them, and I know this also makes me improve personally in so many ways,’’ he continues.

The forward has so far found the back of the net against Posta Rangers, Tusker, Bidco United and recently Homeboyz in the league and believes that, given more trust upfront for the Glamour Boys, he can take that tally up and in the course of it help his team finish as high as possible.

‘’Remaining consistent for a striker is usually a big challenge but not hard. I personally intend to add more goals, God-willing and along the way help my team finish in the highest position ever in its history," he concludes.

Shabana recently brought in former Murang’a Seal FC coach Osborne Monday, who returned to the club having previously worked as a video analyst.

Assigned the first assistant role, Monday will be deputised by Ongwae, who now takes up the second assistant’s role for the remainder of the season.
