The victory takes Power Dynamos to 58 points, seven clear of second placed Red Arrows
Moses Shumah is a man on a mission, and a very clear one at that: winning the Zambian Super League ZSL Golden Boot in his first attempt. The main man upfront for league leaders Power Dynamos, Shumah struck his 18th goal on Saturday in a hotly contested Kitwe derby, dispatching Nkana FC at the Levi Mwanawasa Stadium. He is, by far and large, unstoppable, and his team knows it.
Shumah sought a new challenge at the end of the 2024/25 FKF Premier League campaign, from which he walked away with the Golden Boot. Power Dynamos were ready for the lanky forward, whose towering leaps in the 18 yard area are responsible for more than half of his goals. He rises to meet crosses with purpose, something defenders in the ZSL are yet to counter. After his 18th, Shumah remains focused.

“The most important thing is to stay consistent and focused. There will be more opportunities to score more goals and, if my focus is right, I will add a few,” says the former Kakamega Homeboyz man.
His 18th goal on Saturday equals Jesse Were’s highest ever tally at Zesco United during his prime, and it is evident Shumah could stretch the Kenyan record further and raise the bar significantly. He is modest enough to say Jesse Were’s record was not even on his mind. He is simply focused on his job at Power.
“It is an honour to reach such heights as equalling Jesse’s record. He is a Kenyan legend and this only serves to inspire me more. If I can do what he has done before, then hopefully I can go a mile further and make a name for myself here too,” continues the Kenyan international.
Many players take time to adjust to new environments, but the Dynamos number nine has taken to the ZSL like a fish to water. For him, and other Kenyans, there is no language barrier, and the style of football is largely similar to the FKF Premier League, making adaptation easier.
“I would not say there is a lot of difference between the football played here and back home. The elements are the same, and that could explain why most of us rarely find it difficult to adapt,” he adds.
Shumah shares the dressing room with fellow Kenyan Emmanuel Osoro, who made a name for himself at FC Talanta by scoring freely. Both players made the switch to Zambia after dominating the Kenyan scoring charts in the same season. Power Dynamos were clearly targeting a specific profile, and although Osoro has not yet found his rhythm upfront, he remains a valuable option off the bench for coach Osward Mutapa, occasionally called upon and sometimes starting in cup competitions.
ZSL regulars Zesco United and Nkana are enduring a season to forget, leaving Power Dynamos well placed to defend their league title. Shumah is fully aligned with that ambition.
“I have never won a Premier League title. It would be nice to win one. That is why, even as I push my personal targets, I know they align with the team’s intention of retaining the title,” he concludes.
The victory takes Power Dynamos to 58 points, seven clear of second placed Red Arrows, with a game in hand. With just eight matches remaining before the season concludes, coach Osward Mutapa has the task of steering his side smoothly toward the 2025/26 ZSL title.
Their next outing is a midweek clash against third placed Kabwe Warriors on Wednesday.
