Record champions Gor Mahia were awarded their 22nd title, as Kariobangi Sharks saw their effort to avoid relegation fall short

The FKF Premier League came to a conclusion over the weekend, with matchweek 34 bringing to an end a successful season with eye-catching games that saw the winners crowned, and decided the relegation battles, leaving us with plenty of lessons.

Gor Mahia headed into the weekend having already been declared champions, and the major focus was on the battle against relegation, which in the end, consumed Kariobangi Sharks.

Mozzart Sport once again comprehensively covered all the nine matches, and in the last of this weekly series, shares some six key lessons from the last matchweek of the season.

Naibois new Gor Mahia’s bogey team?

Nairobi United are probing to be the new bogey team for Kenyan giants Gor Mahia with the latest being a 1-0 win over K’Ogalo on coronation day.

Throughout the season homestretch, The Green Army was keen to win the league before their final day, for fear that Naibois could cause them an upset on final day.

Their fears seem to have been confirmed, as while they won the league, the 2025 Mozzart Bet Cup champions were there to spoil the party through a first half header by Enock Machaka.

In the three meetings between the two clubs, Naibois have won twice, while the other match was abandoned with the scores at 1-1, making the league newbies unbeaten against the 22-time champions.

Bidco’s last kicks down AFC Leopards

The Ulinzi Sports Complex brought together two teams that had a disappointing end to the season. AFC Leopards had just lost the league title race to their arch-rivals Gor Mahia, while Bidco United were playing their last match in the FKFPL before being relegated to the NSL.

Leopards had taken a lead early in the second half through Victor Otieno, but a lapse of concentration in the dying minutes, perhaps due to their disappointment, allowed Bidco to stage a comeback with goals in the 83rd and 89th minutes respectively, to hand the Oilers a consolation on their way down.

Shabana still paying for Okidi’s sacking

Shabana’s poor form in the season homestretch was compounded by a last day 2-1 defeat to KCB FC.

The Glamour Boys have endured bad form since the controversial sacking of coach Peter Okidi on 15 March, a decision that has seen the club win just one of their last seven matches.

Okidi was sacked with Shabana sitting third on the log, but with his departure which witnessed uproar from a section of fans, and boycotting of their matches, the club finished the league fifth on the league table with 52 points, 17 shy of champions Gor Mahia.

APS Bomet miss on millions on final day

APS Bomet failed to claim Ksh1.85 million winning bonus from club patron Kipchumba Murkomen following their 1-1 draw with Tusker FC.

The law enforcers had been promised Ksh50,000 to each of the 37 team members to win in their final five league matches that were key for their survival.

While the club bagged four wins, they could not replicate the same form against Tusker and settled for a draw.

However, the point was enough to have the league newbies settle for a 10th position on the league table, after an impressive 10-match unbeaten run in their final matches that included six wins.

End of an Era: Kariobangi Sharks relegated

2018 Mozzart Bet Cup champions Kariobangi Sharks were relegated despite a 6-0 win over Sofapaka on the final match day.

Sharks finished the season sitting 16th in the league table with 38 points, in what was a poor season for the club.

The final whistle marked the end of their 10 seasons in top flight football since their promotion in 2017.

However, the club may get a chance to retain their FKFPL status through a playoff, should a case challenging the use of 2025 league rules that demand the relegation of the bottom three teams, be successful.

Okoth saves Ulinzi from relegation

As has been his norm this season, Paul Okoth stood to be counted and scored a goal that not only gave Ulinzi Stars a 1-0 win over Posta Rangers, but also confirmed their stay in the FKFPL.

The soft-spoken forward has been on form this season for an otherwise off-colour Ulinzi side, and become their main hope for survival in the homestretch.

His penalty in the 86th minute ensured that the 2010 league champions ended the season at 13th on the log with 41 points, three ahead of Sharks in the red zone.
