Wrexham are currently sixth on the Championship standings, six points ahead of chasing Southampton in seventh

Harambee Stars defender Zak Vyner was a full participant for his side, Wrexham AFC, as they solidified their spot in the EFL Championship playoffs with a big 2-0 win over Welsh rivals Swansea at the STōK Cae Ras on Friday, 13 March.

Vyner, who was on the same night called up to Kenya’s senior national football team set to play two friendlies later this month, had a solid showing in midfield, anchoring Phil Parkinson’s side to a well-earned victory after their recent stumble against Hull City on Tuesday, 10 March.

The 28-year-old, born to a Kenyan mother, as per stats provided by Sofascore, completed 78 per cent of his total passes and was accurate on all his long passes, a performance that cast a shadow on his half-time substitution against the Tigers last time out.

The hosts, who are now six points ahead of seventh-placed Southampton in sixth, got their goals in either half, through Nathan Broadhead and Callum Doyle.

Wrexham, after a busy schedule of three games in seven days, are swiftly back into action on Tuesday, 17 March, when they come up against Watford at Vicarage Road.

Olunga substituted off early

Elsewhere in Qatar, Harambee Stars skipper Michael Olunga played only 37 minutes of Al Arabi’s 1-1 draw with Al Ahli Doha at the Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium on Friday night.

The 31-year-old striker, who was making a return to his team’s starting eleven for the first time since 5 February, was hooked off minutes before the break, with young forward Mohamed Khaled Gouda taking his place.

The club did not explain the reasoning behind the first-half switch, which was also accompanied by manager Cosmin Contra taking off the injured Al Hashmi Al Hussain.

The cameo extended Olunga’s patchy form in the last one and a half months, a period in which he has only played one full match, and last scored a league goal in November.

Waweru logs minutes

In Ireland, Harambee Stars prospect Wilson Waweru played 86 minutes for Division One side Cobh Ramblers as they lost 2-0 to Athlone at the Athlone Town Stadium on Friday night.

Waweru, 25, was making his fifth straight start for Ramblers, who conceded two goals from Patrick Ferry and Aaron Connolly in six second-half minutes to stumble to their second loss of the season.

Ramblers, with the defeat, are now down to seventh in the Irish second-tier, and winless in their last three matches.
