“The perpetrator behind the death of our dear brother Silas Abungana has been apprehended. We appreciate the swift action by the authorities as we continue to mourn and seek justice for Silas. Forever in our hearts, Silas,” read a statement from the club.
The suspect, identified as Denmark Muchiti, the younger brother of the deceased, had been on the run following the incident but is now under the arm of police.
Authorities confirmed that Muchiti is currently being held at Shisasari Police Station in Kakamega County as investigations continue.
Abungana succumbed to severe head injuries after he was allegedly struck with a blunt object. Reports indicate that the injuries caused a blood clot in his brain, which ultimately led to his death.
The former Shabana FC, Gucha Stars, Zoo FC and MCF defender had joined Kakamega Homeboyz earlier this season and had already established himself as a key player in the squad.

The club confirmed Abungana’s death on Thursday morning through an official statement, revealing that he passed away shortly before midnight on Wednesday while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital.
Homeboyz chairman Cleophas ‘Toto’ Shimanyula made an emotional appeal to the government to ensure justice is served following the tragic loss.
“It is a great loss to us as a club. I am appealing to the government to help us arrest the person who did this so that justice can be served,” he said.
The club noted that the defender had been undergoing treatment for serious head injuries sustained during the shocking attack, which has left the club, his family and the wider football fraternity in deep mourning.
Abungana joined Homeboyz in August 2025 ahead of the current season and quickly became a key member of the squad under head coach Patrick Odhiambo.
Before joining Homeboyz, he featured for Shabana FC and Gucha Stars.
He was part of the Shabana side that secured promotion to the FKF Premier League in 2023 before leaving the club in January 2024.
He later reunited with former coach Sammy Okoth at Gucha Stars, where he helped the club gain promotion to the National Super League (NSL) for the 2025/26 season, earning a move to Kakamega Homeboyz.
