The clash between the two giants carried the weight of early-season momentum, with Chiefs entering the tie on nine points and Sundowns on seven.
Kick-off was delayed for fifteen minutes as the stadium gates worked overtime to safely admit the large numbers of fans in attendance, underlining the magnitude of the occasion.
Contrasting tactical approaches
The two sides approached the match with distinct styles reflective of their managers’ philosophies.
Nasreddine Nabi deployed Chiefs in a 3-4-3 structure that allowed them to defend with numbers and hit on the counter, while Miguel Cardoso stuck to Sundowns’ traditional possession-heavy approach, lining his team in a 4-2-3-1 system.
Chiefs’ setup featured Brandon Petersen in goal, protected by a back three of Zitha Kwinika, Inacio Miguel, and Paseka Mako.
Thabiso Monyane and Pule Mmodi worked the flanks as wingbacks, while Thabo Cele and Sibongiseni Mthethwa anchored midfield.
In attack, Makabi Lilepo and Mduduzi Shabalala played as inside forwards supporting Wandile Duba at center forward.
Sundowns’ lineup had Ronwen Williams in goal, with Keanu Cupido and Malibongwe Khoza forming the central defensive pairing.
Thapelo Morena and Fawaaz Basadien operated as fullbacks, providing attacking width.
Teboho Mokoena and Jayden Adams held midfield, with Marcelo Allende in an advanced central role.
Arthur Sales and Tashreeq Matthews worked the wings, supporting striker Iqraam Rayners.
Sundowns’ ball progression and shape
Cardoso’s men stuck to their possession-first principles, building from the back through Williams, Cupido, and Khoza, with one of Adams or Mokoena dropping deep to form a triangle and aid progression.
This structure allowed Sundowns to maintain control and shift into a narrow attacking 2-2-2-4 shape where their fullbacks provided all the width.

The midfield box—formed by Adams, Mokoena, Allende, and Sales—was designed to create central overloads, compress Chiefs into narrow defensive zones, and then release the wide players.
On the right, Sales often drifted infield to function as a second playmaker alongside Allende, while Matthews tucked inside to form a strike pair with Rayners.
Chiefs’ defensive mid block and counter threat
Chiefs, however, managed the Sundowns setup effectively by retreating into a 5-3-2 mid block.
Their three central midfielders pressed aggressively on Allende and Sales whenever Sundowns attempted to progress centrally.
This forced the visitors into recycling possession, unable to consistently break through Chiefs’ compact block.

The defensive solidity of Chiefs’ back three also gave them numerical superiority, consistently nullifying the two-man Sundowns frontline of Matthews and Rayners.
Whenever possession was regained, Chiefs’ attacking plan revolved around using the pace and directness of Lilepo and Shabalala.
Both inside forwards stretched the Sundowns defence wide, creating gaps that could be exploited, though Lilepo’s decision-making in the final third often let him down.
Second half adjustments
In the second period, Cardoso introduced tactical tweaks to break the stalemate.
Matthews was instructed to stay wide rather than drifting inside, aiming to drag one of the Chiefs centerbacks away and open central spaces for Allende.
Chiefs responded by adjusting their wingback responsibilities—Monyane tracking Matthews tightly, with Lilepo working hard to cover Basadien’s overlapping runs.
This back-and-forth tactical exchange saw both managers neutralise one another effectively.
Despite Sundowns enjoying more possession and territory, Chiefs’ organisation and counter-attacking threat ensured that the match ended in a goalless draw, reflecting a balanced contest of ideas.
Tactics dictated stalemate
This match was defined by tactical contrasts: Sundowns with their patient, possession-heavy build-up against Chiefs’ compact defensive block and explosive counters.
Chiefs succeeded in frustrating Sundowns’ attempts to dominate the central areas, while Sundowns limited the effectiveness of Chiefs’ transitions through quick structural adjustments.
Ultimately, the barren scoreline was less a reflection of missed opportunities and more an illustration of how both sides’ tactical discipline cancelled each other out.
