After the defeat to England, the African nation's head coach found himself in an uncomfortable situation following the match
DR Congo confirmed the passing of head coach Sebastien Desabre’s father following their heartbreaking World Cup defeat to England.
The African side came within touching distance of a famous victory, holding the lead for almost 70 minutes in Atlanta before Harry Kane turned the match around. The England captain first restored parity before striking the decisive goal in the 86th minute to seal a dramatic comeback for the Three Lions.
Despite the disappointment, DR Congo earned widespread praise for their spirited display in what was their first World Cup appearance since 1974, when they competed under the name Zaire.
Yet the emotional occasion was overshadowed by devastating personal news involving Desabre. It remains unclear when the 49-year-old was informed of his father’s death. He completed his post-match media duties before the announcement was made at the conclusion of the press conference.
A media officer said in French: “Thank you but we are announcing that the coach has lost his father. So sincere condolences.”
The briefing ended immediately afterward. Desabre appeared surprised that the announcement had been made in front of the media, quietly responding with a respectful “merci” ("thank you") before leaving the room.
