While in Spain, the defender featured in two friendly matches for Iconic Football Academy, an institution that prides itself on helping every footballer fulfil their potential.

The young defender was on the score sheet as Iconic held Nueva Andalucia 1-1 and was further involved in their 2-3 loss to Atletico B.

The highly-rated full back has since returned to the country and was part of Ulinzi Stars’ match day squad that secured a 2-1 win over Mathare United on Saturday, 23 May.

“They (Spanish clubs) have modern equipment. The youth teams are well covered as far as infrastructure is concerned. They scout players from far and wide and nurture them early,” said Ochieng.

The Makongeni-born player went ahead to reveal lessons on time management and the physical nature of the game during his trials.

They are very strict on time and are also very physical, even in training, unlike what many people think of European football. Eventually, it is the hard work that someone puts in that pays,” he added.

Nonetheless, Ochieng, who was part of the Kenya U19 squad that won the Costa Daurada Cup in 2024 on Spanish soil, expressed his optimism about nailing a move to Europe soon.

“The trials were all good. I did my part as a player. I am now just waiting for good news. I tried out with several clubs apart from the two known ones, but I will keep that close to my chest for now,” he remarked.

As he awaits, Ochieng will be fixated on helping Ulinzi Stars retain their league status with the 2010 league champions sitting just a point above the drop zone.

The Soldiers are scheduled to play Tusker FC on Wednesday, 27 May, before concluding the season with a match against Posta Rangers on Sunday, 31 May.
