Newcomer Micah Obiero has described the opportunity to represent Kenya as one of the proudest moments of his career, while revealing that his brother, Zech Obiero, played a key role in convincing him to accept the Harambee Stars call-up.
Born in England, Obiero is eligible to play for Kenya through his father, Aggrey Obonyo, a former Gor Mahia player who relocated later.
The Wealdstone forward is in line to make his Harambee Stars debut during the upcoming friendly matches against Kyrgyzstan and Palestine this June, following in the footsteps of his brother Zech.
His elder brother earned his first senior call-up during the March FIFA Series held in Rwanda.
“It is a good feeling to represent Kenya after the season I’ve had. To see that I’ve been recognised and called up is really special,” Micah told Game Ni 90.
Before linking up with the national team, the striker consulted his brother Zech about Kenya and the Harambee Stars environment, and the response only increased his excitement.
“Zech only had good words to say about Kenya. That really encouraged me to come. He said Kenyans are crazy about football,” he said.
Micah is also excited about the opportunity to work under Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy, saying the South African legend’s experience as a striker could be invaluable to his development.
“It is exciting, especially because he played in my position. When you look at the experience he has and the level he reached in football, it will be good for me if he can share some of his football knowledge to help improve my game,” he added.
The forward now hopes to make a strong first impression in national colours and help make Kenyans proud.
“I can’t wait to represent Kenya and make the country proud with the national team,” he said.
