After numerous missed chances, the English club ultimately suffered a heavy blow, losing 1–0 to Danish side Midtjylland

In the second match of the season between Nottingham Forest and Midtjylland, the outcome mirrored the first encounter — the Danish side emerged victorious. However, the entire game was dominated by Nottingham Forest attacks, with numerous chances created but failing to convert. In the end, as a punishment for their missed opportunities, the visitors capitalized on their one clear chance, scoring the decisive goal to secure the win and a valuable advantage ahead of the return leg in Denmark.

Midtjylland almost shocked Forest in the 3rd minute when Brumado leapt highest to meet Daniel Billing’s cross, but Murillo cleared the ball off the line. The chance came after an early error from Morato, giving the visitors a promising opportunity.

Forest struggled to build rhythm when moving the ball slowly, with the Danish side content to sit back and stay compact. A few moments of threat emerged when Midtjylland tried to exploit space behind the Forest defense, but Markus Sels reacted quickly to claim the ball.

The hosts grew into the game, with Hutchinson testing the visitors’ goalkeeper Olafsson from distance in the 20th minute. Olafsson could only parry the powerful, swerving effort for a corner, which Forest failed to capitalize on.

Chances continued to come and go. Castillo had a shooting opportunity in the 30th minute after the ball was cut back into the box, but a poor touch let it slip away. Three minutes later, Igor Jesus tried to create space with a shot from the edge of the box, but it went wide. Signs of improvement from Forest were clear, though, as they began to assert more pressure.

Midtjylland were nearly punished in the 34th minute from a Simsir free kick, with a dangerous cross flashing across the six-yard box. Murillo and Dominguez were closest to making contact, but Forest escaped.

The final ten minutes saw Forest dominate the action. In the 41st minute, Anderson unleashed a sweet strike toward the top corner, only for Olafsson to make a brilliant save. Moments later, a chaotic scene saw Billing clear off the line after a corner routine almost led to a Midtjylland own-goal.

Forest came agonizingly close again in stoppage time, as Gibbs-White thought he had scored, only for the visiting captain to deflect the shot behind. The hosts had looked dangerous on rapid breaks, with Igor Jesus pulling Hutchinson out wide and then cutting it back perfectly.

Forest picked up where they left off after the break, immediately creating chances. In the 46th minute, Hutchinson set up Aina around the penalty spot, but the full-back’s shot was blocked by his own captain as Gibbs-White tried to evade the play.

A minute later, Dominguez fired a powerful effort across goal that swerved narrowly wide, showing how Forest were asserting themselves. The introduction of Williams on the left added more attacking impetus as the home side pushed numbers forward.

Forest continued pressing, with Hudson-Odoi forcing a near-post effort in the 50th minute that drifted wide. However, Sels then kept Midtjylland in the game with a crucial save from Andreasen’s long-range strike in the 52nd minute. Moments later, Andreasen came close again, curling a shot onto the bar from the edge of the box.

Despite having numerical advantages in the box, Forest struggled to convert. In the 58th minute, a man-up situation saw Hutchinson take an extra touch and miss a chance, and two minutes later Gibbs-White was unable to get the contact he needed on an excellent cross from Anderson. Anderson himself remained lively, cutting inside in the 68th minute to create space, but his shot was comfortably saved by Olafsson.

Forest’s frustration mounted as they dominated possession but failed to find a breakthrough. Midtjylland, however, struck with 10 minutes remaining. In the 80th minute, a speculative cross was met by substitute Cho at the back post, who easily outmuscled Aina and powered a header into the bottom corner, shocking the City Ground and giving the visitors the lead.

Forest nearly responded immediately. In the 83rd minute, Anderson fired from inside the area, only for a deflection to send the ball crashing into the side netting.
