We would rather lose with young players than tolerate indiscipline, says Mathare boss

The players were suspended for two weeks without pay for breaching their contracts

Mathare United Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jecton Obure has opened up on why the club suspended four key players despite the influence in the team.

On 30 October, The Slum Boys announced the suspension of: left back Erick Mulu, midfielders Elli Asieche and Kevin Kimani, as well as Brian Ouru, for participating in an unsanctioned match/tournament days before their match against Police FC.

The players were suspended for two weeks without pay for breaching their contract.

The highly publicized match in question was between the now infamous A Mosquito FC and Zied FC, which ended in a 5-5 draw.

The four have already missed one match: the team's 1-0 win that ended league leaders KCB FC’s unbeaten run on 3rd October.

Obure expounded on their decision in an exclusive interview with Mozzart Sport.

"When we suspended key players, most people bashed and abused us, but we said choices have consequences and we had to face whatever comes,” said Obure.

It was a big decision. The four are generally big players and starters in the team. In fact, Asieche and Kimani are club captains.

The club received more backing from fans on their decision after the remarkable win over the Bankers without their input.

“We better lose with these young players, who are focused and know what they want, rather than have players who do not know what they want to do yet most of them are senior team members,” he remarked.

The international break and rearrangement of fixtures have come as a blessing to the quartet, who will now be available for selection for the team's next league match, against Posta Rangers on 23 November.

The four resumed training with the rest of the squad on Monday, 4 November, when their suspension lapsed.

Other clubs that took disciplinary measures against players who participated in unsanctioned games are Kenyan giants AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia.
