The club has been without a commercial partner for three years

Mombasa Stars Chief Executive Officer Nick Arunga has revealed why the club rebranded few weeks ago.

Stars initially operated as Coastal Heroes in the previous three seasons.

This is not the first time the club is changing its name as Super League outfit as it was known as Coast Stima when it was enjoying sponsorship from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company.

In an email sent to the club, the change of name was ratified by Football Kenya Federation competitions on September 18, 2023.

"Reference is made to your letter dated August 30th, in which you gave notice to FKF regarding the change of your name from Coastline Heroes to Mombasa Stars. In this regard, note that the change has been approved and the same shall be affected on the National Super League fixtures," read part of the email from Kandanda House.

Arunga disclosed that the change of name was aimed at wooing commercial partners as the outfit has been struggling to make ends meet.

“We made a request to the federation to change our name to Mombasa Stars Football Club, and we are pleased our request was accepted. The club's change in name is prompted by the desire to give the team a chance to pursue and engage potential sponsors who would like to be part of the club's progress. We've had a difficult period in running the club without proper funding, and we thought of having a new name in place, and that led to the change," said Arunga

Arunga, who was newly appointed club CEO before the season kicked off, clarified that the club, which was formed in 2008, has also made changes to its managerial structure.

"I would also like to notify the public and lovers of the club that we have made some changes in the club's management, which will be led by Mr. Abdulrahman Hussein (President), Gabriel Mghendi (Chairman), Martin Okondi (Assistant Chairman), Nick Arunga (CEO), and Alamin Wemalo (Strategist)," Arunga stated.

Meanwhile Arunga said the club had landed a kitting deal with Bullah Sports.

"I equally want to add that we have secured a season-long deal with kitting firm Bullah Sports. They will provide the team with all the kitting materials for the whole season," Arunga concluded.

The Hussein Madaga-led team trounced their archrivals, Assad FC, 3-1 over the weekend.
