Woltemade is not enough – forgotten Delap on the Magpies’ radar

Newcastle had already been considering a move for Delap, and the striker is back on the club’s radar following the underwhelming performances of German international

Could Liam Delap be the player brought in to challenge or even replace Nick Woltemade? With speculation surrounding the German forward’s future at Newcastle continuing to grow, the club is already exploring attacking reinforcements ahead of the summer transfer window—regardless of whether Woltemade remains at St James’ Park.

According to reports from England, the Magpies have identified Liam Delap as a leading target. The young striker, currently with Chelsea, is regarded as one of England’s most promising center-forwards and has represented the Three Lions at every youth level.

Delap arrived at Chelsea from Ipswich last summer in a deal worth around €40 million. However, much like Woltemade at Newcastle, he has struggled to make a significant impact during his debut campaign. In 26 Premier League appearances, Delap has registered just one goal and one assist.

Despite those modest numbers, transfer insider Ben Jacobs reports that Newcastle remain highly interested. “There is interest in Liam Delap, particularly—from what I’ve been told—from Newcastle United, who are expected to add another striker this summer,” Jacobs revealed.

Even so, Jacobs believes a move away from Stamford Bridge is far from certain. "According to my information, the player wants to stay and fight for his place. If you're Liam Delap—even if Joao Pedro has established himself as the first-choice 'number 9'—you may want to wait and see who the new manager will be."

The situation could also depend on the future of Nicolas Jackson. The striker had previously been linked with Newcastle, but Jacobs now claims he is expected to return to Chelsea once his loan spell ends. Should Jackson remain in west London, Delap could face even tougher competition for minutes, potentially increasing the likelihood of a summer exit.
