The Dutchman can survive on the Reds' bench only if he wins the most precious European silverware
If you haven't heard any romantic news lately, here's the fresh one - Xabi Alonso is on the brink of a return to Liverpool!
According to Spanish media outlets Okdiario and Mundo Deportivo, the former Reds' midfielder will imminently become their manager and sign a three-year deal, as only one scenario can save their current boss, Arne Slot - winning the Champions League.
However, given Liverpool's form this season and their recent displays, it's not likely to happen, especially as the Premier League side will face Paris Saint-Germain or Chelsea in the eventual quarter-finals (if the Reds previously knock out Galatasaray) and probably either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the semis. For the current Liverpool, it's almost a mission impossible.
After surprisingly winning the EPL in his maiden campaign in England, Slot and his men entered the ongoing season as one of the favourites in both the domestic and European competitions, after splashing out nearly €500 million on reinforcements.
Nevertheless, the Reds fell seriously short, as they have lost all the chances to defend the title, while the FA Cup and UCL campaigns do not guarantee success either. And when a team plays subpar and achieves unsatisfactory results, a manager is usually the first to pay the price.
Liverpool were previously interested in Alonso in 2024, even before Slot arrived, following Jurgen Klopp's departure, but the Spaniard opted to stay at Bayer Leverkusen. A year later, he took over Real Madrid's bench, but their "love story" ended even before it started, after just six months and 34 games.
And now, three years following the beginning of their "flirting", Xabi and Liverpool could finally reunite to the delight of all the Scousers.
