Prisons stars Lorine Chebet (middle blocker) and Meldina Sande (captain) represented the club in the Malkia Strikers squad.

After completing his assignment with the Malkia Strikers at the 2025 FIVB World Championship in Phuket, Thailand, trainer Azenga Mavisi has now set his sights on guiding the Kenya Prisons women’s team back to the top of the National League.

Mavisi, the Prisons assistant coach, was part of the bench when the side last lifted the league title in 2021.

With the new season scheduled to begin in late October, he believes the experience gained with the national team will be vital in their title chase.

At the global tournament, Mavisi helped steer Malkia to a 3-0 win over Vietnam (25-23, 25-22, 25-20) and a third-place finish in Pool G.

Kenya also fought bravely against Poland, winning a set in a 1-3 loss (17-25, 25-15, 15-25, 14-25), before suffering a straight-sets defeat to Germany (25-22, 25-08, 25-18).

Poland and Germany advanced to the round of 16, leaving Kenya eliminated despite their spirited show.

“It has been a long wait for Prisons to reclaim the league title. The exposure and lessons from this championship will be very useful to my team. I had two of my players here, and they too have learned valuable lessons we intend to apply back home,” said Mavisi, who previously coached Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School.

Prisons stars Lorine Chebet (middle blocker) and Meldina Sande (captain) represented the club in the Malkia Strikers squad.

Mavisi urged Kenyan volleyball to embrace more international exposure through friendlies with elite nations.

“We have drawn positives from this championship. Teams like Italy and Germany are already open to playing us in friendly matches. These are the kinds of opportunities we must pursue to keep improving,” he noted.

He added that the national technical bench is exploring the idea of monthly training sessions to keep the team in shape and enhance chemistry among players.

Mavisi is expected to arrive back in Nairobi with the final batch of the Malkia Strikers contingent on Monday at 2:30 pm.
