Head coach Gideon Tarus has trimmed his provisional squad down to 16, from the initial 25, with two more set to be dropped before the team's departure. The tactician is confident of a strong performance and qualification for the continental showpiece set for September.
The competition in Kampala also serves as the first step for LA2028 Olympic Games qualification as well as the 2027 FIVB World Championship set for USA.
Tarus' squad has, however, elicited mixed reactions as key players, led by former Stars captain Enock Mogeni have been dropped. Also missing are veteran libero Sam Juma, opposite hitter Joshua Kimaru and centre player Shadrack Misiko, in-form Stephen Maluki,Bethwell Kiplagat,Elvis Mein,Amos Karani and Dillon Chumba.
With the squad set to hit camp on Thursday, opposite hitter Elphas Makuto, who was not part of the initial squad, and outside hitter Nicholas Matui are yet to join training as they are still away with their respective professional clubs Rwanda Energy Group, and Rwanda National Police.
"This is a very competitive tournament and the players know what is expected of them. Our focus in the remaining days is on fine-tuning combinations, improving execution and ensuring the players are mentally ready for the matches ahead," Tarus offered.
"The final squad selection will depend on consistency and tactical discipline. We want players who can adapt quickly, stay composed under pressure and execute the tactical plan throughout the competition,” he went on.
Tarus will rely on the experience of players like Kenya Ports Authority's trio of Dennis Omollo, Peter Kamara and Brian Kamonde who have been part of the team's mainstay in previous assignments, Kenyan international setter Brian Melly, middle blocker Simon Kipkorir, among others.
