Hosts JKUAT Cougars will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing outing at last weekend's Met 7s.
JKUAT endured a torrid campaign at the Met 7s after finishing bottom of Pool D, but head coach Smith Muhoya believes the home tournament presents the perfect opportunity to assess his side's progress ahead of the 2026 National Sevens Circuit.
The Juja 7s has been strategically placed on the calendar two weeks before the opening leg of the National Sevens Circuit, giving participating teams a final competitive test before the campaign begins with the Prinsloo 7s in Nakuru on Saturday, 25 July.
Muhoya said the tournament was designed to help teams identify areas for improvement before the circuit gets underway.
"Our goals are to use the tournament as a good preparation for the upcoming National Sevens Circuit that is to commence on the 25th of July in Nakuru with the Prinsloo leg.
We positioned the tournament strategically this weekend so that teams will have two weeks to analyse themselves and polish up with the BYE weekend before the first leg of the NSC,” he told Mozzart Sport.
The hosts have been drawn in Pool A alongside Kenyatta University, Mount Kenya University (MKU) Thika, and Hawks, a group Muhoya believes will provide the right level of competition as his side seeks a place in the main cup quarterfinals.
"We as a team are in a good pool with Blak Blad, Makueni Wakanda, and MKU Thika. This will be a good test and preparation for day two, and see what we have been able to work on after the Met 7s last weekend.
We aim to top the pool and progress to the main cup quarters and challenge for the cup on home soil,” he offered.
Beyond JKUAT's ambitions, the former KCB Rugby flyhalf expressed hope that the tournament would provide valuable preparation for every participating side.
"As a club, we hope for a successful tournament for everyone involved and hope that the participating teams get enough time and chance to see what they have been working on,” he said.
Defending champions Zetech headline Pool B, where they will face Suburbs, Kiambu, and USIU.
Kenya Cup giants KCB have been placed in Pool C alongside Stallions, Makueni, and PBUEA, while Pool D features CUEA, Machine, Homeboyz, and Gachie.
Menengai Oilers lead Pool E, where they will come up against KCB Cubs, KCA, and Blizzards.
