The two bring a wealth of experience from both the playing field and sports administration into the quasi-judicial body, which was established under the Sports Act 2013 to hear and resolve sports-related disputes in Kenya.
Omondi, a former Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) secretary, has long been a familiar figure in Kenyan rugby circles.
A former player and now the captain of the Kenya Rugby Legends, he has been instrumental in keeping veteran rugby alive through the Legends’ side, which frequently features in exhibition and charity matches against teams from across the region.
His leadership journey dates back to 2016, when he helped revive the Nondescripts veterans’ team, an initiative that eventually inspired the formation of the national Legends outfit.
Eddie OmondiBeyond his exploits on the field, Omondi also contributed significantly to rugby governance during his tenure as KRU’s Honorary Secretary, where he applied his legal and administrative expertise to strengthen the union’s structures.
Although he stepped down from the position in 2015, his ongoing involvement through the Legends team underscores his enduring dedication to the growth and preservation of Kenya’s rugby heritage.
Also taking the oath was Mukoko, a trailblazer in Kenyan rugby and a World Rugby-accredited Match Officials Educator and Trainer.
After hanging up her boots in 2009 as a Kenya Lionesses flanker, Mukoko seamlessly transitioned into officiating, making history as the first woman to referee a Kenya Cup match, a landmark achievement for women in sport.
In 2017, she became East Africa’s first female World Rugby–accredited educator and trainer, further solidifying her role in developing match officials across the region.
Two years later, she was elected to the Kenya Rugby Union board, where she played a pivotal role in drafting the union’s first-ever Safeguarding and Inclusion Policy, promoting safety, equality, and empowerment within the game.
Peris MukokoHer influence extended beyond Kenya’s borders when she earned the World Rugby Executive Leadership Scholarship in 2021, supporting her continued studies in sports management and mentorship.
Other members sworn in alongside Omondi and Mukoko are Allan Mola Owinyi (Deputy Chairperson), Victor Omwebu, Nicodemus Musau, and Luke Irungu.
The oaths were administered by Deputy Registrar Alice Mukenga in the presence of the tribunal’s chairperson, Bernard Murunga.
The appointment of Omondi and Mukoko marks a significant step toward strengthening Kenya’s sports governance, with both figures expected to bring their extensive experience and leadership to the Sports Disputes Tribunal’s mission of promoting fairness and accountability in sport.
