Today, being a Friday, we take a break from the usual on-pitch action to explore the off-duty side of former Kenya 7s star Humphrey Kayange, also known as "Tall."

It's impossible to talk about Kenyan Rugby without mentioning Kayange, one of the most iconic figures in the sport.

His impact has been monumental both on and off the pitch, inspiring countless young players across the nation.

Kayange finished his career in the World Series as Kenya’s third-highest point scorer with 799 points and 159 tries.

Not only is he a rugby superstar, but he also holds a Master’s degree in organic chemistry from the University of Bristol.

His accolades are extensive, including captaining Kenya to their maiden cup final during the 2009 IRB World 7s Circuit leg of Adelaide and leading the team to the historic semifinals of the Rugby World Cup 7s the same year.

In 2012, he was honoured with the Order of the Golden Warrior (OGW) by President Mwai Kibaki.

In 2021, he made history as the first Kenyan to be inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

A veteran of 12 HSBC World Rugby 7s series (2004–2016), he officially retired in 2016 after leading Kenya to the Rio Olympics. Currently, he serves as the director of the Kenya 7s squad.

While his exploits on the rugby pitch have been widely celebrated, some lesser-known facets of his life will captivate you.

Mozzart Sport ventured to reveal the untold stories of this indomitable legend, who continues to create legacies.

1. He plays golf

Unknown to many, Kayange has a passion for golf.

In February, he claimed victory in the men’s category of the 7th Alumni Golf Challenge in Limuru with 43 points and a handicap of 24.

This was an improvement from his 2023 performance, where he finished 15th overall with 34 points.

“When I retired, I did not want to play rugby at all, but these days, I play golf. It is not a very physical sport like rugby, but it has given me a different challenge as an athlete; just trying to learn the sport and be better,” he shared.

2. He plays vet rugby

Kayange plays vet rugby for Nondies by Legends and has turned up for them in several matches.

Kenya Legends will play against Uganda Legends on Saturday 8, and Kayange’s name leads the list

I also started playing vets rugby. I hope that makes me feel fit,” he remarked.

3. He enjoys traditional Kenyan cuisine

Kayange has a taste for traditional Kenyan cuisine, with Ugali, beef fry, and Sukuma wiki being among his favourite dishes.

This hearty combination reflects his appreciation for wholesome and nourishing meals, providing the energy and strength needed for his endeavours.

My favourite meal is Ugali beef fry with fresh Sukuma wiki. I loved chapatis when I was young, but nowadays, I am advised not to eat them because I am getting old,” he disclosed.

4. He misses the year 2009

The year 2009 is unforgettable for Kayange. It was the year he accomplished the unimaginable as Shujaa captain, leading Kenya to the semifinals of the Rugby World Cup 7s and securing successive top-ten finishes in the IRB Sevens Circuit.

It was when we first qualified for the semifinals, and how I played that year set the tone for how we played in the subsequent years,” he revealed.

5. He reminisces about the Singapore 7s

The year 2016 is memorable for every rugby fan. Shujaa defied all odds to win the Singapore 7s leg.

Starting the series, Kenya saw off Russia 21-7 in the opening Pool C match before drawing against Scotland 12-12 before losing to South Africa 12-0 to finish second with six points.

Shujaa then thumped France 28-7 in the Main Cup quarterfinals before knocking out Argentina 15-12 in the semis to stroll into the finals with Fiji, where they won 30-7 to be crowned the winners.

Singapore 7s is at the top in terms of our achievement as a team and personal achievement,” he told Mozzart Sport.
