Just hours after Kenyan marathoner Brimin Misoi Kipkorir was banned by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for using prohibited substances, the athletics world has been rocked once again with the news that Careen Cheptoek has also been found guilty of a doping violation.
The promising marathoner has been handed a two-year ban after testing positive for Methylprednisolone, a prohibited substance under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations.
Methylprednisolone falls under the 2024 WADA Prohibited List in the category S9. Glucocorticoids. It is banned in competition when administered via injectable, oral, or rectal routes.
The 32-year-old was flagged in December 2024 at the Taipei Marathon, where she clinched silver with a time of 2:32:53.
Despite her recent success, her career now faces a major setback following the AIU’s ruling. While the anti-doping body found no evidence that Cheptoek's violation was intentional, she will still serve a two-year period of ineligibility. She is however allowed to appeal.
Her achievements in long-distance running include a victory at the 2023 Kaohsiung Marathon in China, where she set a personal best of 2:40:28.
She also won the Roan Antelope Half Marathon that same year with a time of 2:20:08.
Cheptoek further boasts triumphs at the 2019 Lagos Women Run and the 2024 Amman Marathon.
According to World Athletics, she holds a half-marathon personal best of 1:14:43 and a marathon personal best of 2:32:53, set in Taipei.
The news adds to a growing list of doping cases that have cast a shadow over marathon running in recent years.
Kenya, in particular, has been at the centre of multiple high-profile cases.
In 2022, Diana Kipyokei was stripped of her 2021 Boston Marathon title after being found guilty of doping, leading to a six-year ban.
