Chemutai won gold in the 3000m steeplechase at the Olympics in Tokyo last year

Olympic 3000m steeplechase champion Peruth Chemutai is the latest athlete to confirm her participation at the upcoming World Athletics Continental Tour gold meeting, Kip Keino Classic.

The Ugandan clocked 9:01.45 in Tokyo last year to set a new national record over the distance while becoming the first Ugandan woman to win gold at the Olympics.

Last year, the 22-year old failed to complete the race at Kasarani, with her coach later revealing that she had complained about an issue with her knee before getting off before the halfway mark.

In her absence, two-time World Athletics Under-20 champion Celliphine Chespol had a stellar race to win the women's 3000m steeplechase in a time of 9:30.55 ahead of compatriots Fancy Cherono and Jackline Chepkoech who came in second and third respectively.

Olympic bronze medalist Hyvin Kiyeng could not get to the finish line either at the showpiece last year despite having high hopes of benefitting from the home advantage in her bid to turn tables on the Olympic champion.

The event organisers are eager to welcome thousands of fans to the 60, 000 seater Kasarani Stadium on May 7, 2022, after the prevailing Covid-19 situation in the country having forced the inaugural 2020 and 2021 events to take place without spectators.
