The 23-year-old won silver, finishing behind Gudaf Tsegay in last year's games in Oregon
Commonwealth Games 5000m champion, Beatrice Chebet, says she is looking to build on her speed ahead of this year’s world championships where she is hoping to upgrade her silver from Oregon last year.
Chebet was in action during the Athletics Kenya national championship held this weekend, competing in 1500, the same distance she has elected to race in the upcoming World Championship trials set for 7 and 8 July.
Having cruised to the final with ease, clocking 4:12.56 on Thursday to win her heat, her finishing kick was in play as she timed 4:06.09 in the final to win the national title ahead of Miriam Cherop (4:07.14) and former world under-20 champion Purity Chepkirui ((4:07.63).
“This is not an easy distance to compete in, especially against athletes that have specialized in the distance, but I decided to race here as it helps me work on my speed. I already have the 5000m wild card to the championships in Budapest so I have decided to compete in 1500m at the trials too for the same reason,” Chebet offered.
Coming into the national competition, the world cross country champion had produced a superb home stretch sprint to win the 3,000m title at the Oslo Diamond League in a new world leading time of 8:25.01, which also counted as her new personal best and world leading time in the distance.
She makes a return to the Diamond League series on 2 July in Stockholm, Sweden where she goes back to her specialty, renewing rivalry with World Cross Country Championships silver medalist Hawi Feysa.
Also, on the field will be Night of the 10,000m PB’s winner Mizan Alem who is the fastest on the field with a 14:46.20 personal best (PB).
Since losing the world record in the distance to Faith Kipyegon in Paris, World 10,000m champion Letesenbet Gidey will be back in action against Chebet in the Sweden capital.
