Jemuma Montag retained her crown after clocking 42:34.00

Africa race walk champion Emily Ngii has claimed a bronze medal as well as broke the continental record after finishing third in the 10,000m final held at the Alexander Stadium on Saturday.

Ngii, who also represented the country in the recently concluded World Athletics Championships in Oregon clocked an African Record of 45:50.00 that will also double up as her persona best.

She finished behind Jemima Montag of Australia who defended her crown in a style as she posted a new games record of 42:34.00. Priyanka Goswami walked away with silver after timing a new personal best of 43:38.00.

Ngii, who defended her African title during the Senior Africa Athletics Championships held in Mauritius in June showed her intentions of bagging a medal at the global stage as she walked shoulder-to-shoulder with Priyanka and Montag.

Priyanka, took control and set the pace in the initial stages of the race but could not keep close tabs with Montag when she pulled away in the final kilometres.

Besides breaking the African record, Ngii's incredible performance earned the country the tenth medal and the first in the weekend where Kenya is hoping to bag more and scale up on the standings.
