Goodge, a former rugby player-turned endurance athlete, is attempting to break the record for running across Australia, an ambitious 4,000km journey from Perth to Sydney in just 35 days.

In a heartfelt video message shared to Goodge’s Instagram, Kipchoge praised Goodge’s courage and determination, wishing him all the best in the gruelling attempt.

“Hi Will. I see you are journeying across Australia. What you are doing is not just inspiring. It’s proof that no human is limited. Keep pushing. Stay strong and trust in every step.

The road may be long. But your purpose is even greater. I’m cheering you on to Sydney. Good luck!” the message from Kipchoge read.

That message left Goodge in awe. He posted the clip with the caption thanking Kipchoge for the warm wishes.

“Too gassed not to have this up forever. The greatest of all time sending ME a message. Still can’t believe it, thank you Eliud Kipchoge,” he said.

Goodge set off at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, 15 April, from Cottesloe Beach in Perth. His goal is to cover 3,867km, roughly 90 marathons, or more than two per day over 35 gruelling days.

He will be looking to beat the previous record of 39 days and eight hours set by Australia’s Chris Turnbull in 2023.

To stay on pace, Goodge needs to run about 110km daily. The mission is not only physically punishing, but also deeply personal.

Goodge turned to running to process grief after his mother, Amanda, died of cancer in 2017 at just 53.

In her honour, he has raised more than $250,000 (approximately Ksh32.3 million) for cancer charities through various endurance challenges, including running across the UK in 2019 and the USA in 2021.

His latest feat is fundraising for three cancer charities and has captured international attention, particularly as he closes in on the final stretch toward Sydney.

At the time of writing this, he was on the home stretch as he bids to complete the challenge and rewrite history.
